Postnatal Yoga Benefits

Every pregnancy and birth is different for each mother.   It's a life-changing and body changing experience.  The road to recovering pre-pregnancy strength takes time.  It's important to be gentle and kind to yourself in this process.  The main benefits of postnatal yoga include:Better Sleep - this is regardless of being postpartum or not.  Not getting enough sleep during the first year of baby's life is commonly noted.  Sleep deprivation can lead to depression, decrease your memory and ability to focus.  Studies indicate that a regular yoga practice can improve sleep.Balancing hormone levels - Postpartum is a time when your hormones fluctuate.  Your body has high levels of your progesterone in your body during pregnancy to help prevent lactation.  After birth, there is a sudden drop in progesterone levels so that you can start breastfeeding.  This happens with a number of hormones that are high during pregnancy and suddenly low postpartum or vice versa.  Certain yoga poses and yogic breathing exercises improve your brain and hormone regulation.Stress - This is something we all experience these days with our fast-paced lifestyles.  Giving birth and caring for a new baby definitely counts and postpartum mothers are dealing with some new stress.  Yoga is widely accepted to help reduce stress levels.  It can help to lower your blood pressure.Postnatal yoga helps with slowly building up stamina and strength.  The focus of the classes is creating more energy and endurance with a mixture of poses.  There is core strength building and toning the muscles and ligaments of the pelvis.Always remember to check with your doctor to check it is safe for you to start a yoga routine after birth.
