Focusing on a Happy Healthy Gut

An easy option to have a healthier body and mind is to support the ecosystem of bacteria that are living in your digestive system.  These are called microbiome.  We've all got trillions of microbes in our gut and its important to look after them to feel the best.  There's strong evidence showing the microbiome impacts our digestive system, health of our skin, energy levels and how we feel.  About 70-80% of our immunity is in our gut.Food for your friendly bacteria More green veg and a complete variety of them is the best way to have a diverse range of beneficial bacteria.  Your gut will thank you for it.  The best choices includes spinach, cabbage, artichoke, fennel, broccoli and garlic.  I love mixing it up with a veggie quinoa bowl - it includes quinoa, avo, spinach, broccoli, sauerkraut, snap peas, chard, corn fritter, pineapple, and sprouted seeds.Take it easyOur gut is often referred to as our second brain.  Stress plays a big part in our gut health.  We release hormones when we are stressed that can negatively influence our gut bacteria. When your gut gets out of balance it impacts your mind and mood too.  It can contribute to anxiety, fatigue, headaches or depression. It's important to eat mindfully and enjoy the meal.  I know it is sometimes easier said than done.  It's a really good way to take a moment and focus on yourself.  Eating slowly, sitting at the table and taking a moment is really beneficial.  Add in a fun stress buster such as a walk outside, meditation, dancing around your to your favourite song.Put down the sugar!  Refined sugar if you haven't gotten it yet isn't great for your gut.  It feeds the bad bacteria and prevents the growth of the good ones.  And before you pick up the artificial sweeteners these aren't any better.  The artificial sweeteners can cause inflammation and poor metabolism.I find the best alternatives to add sweetness to food and drinks include raw honey, fresh dates or fresh fruits.  Or dark chocolate if I feel the need for something more.
